I chose to come to Florida A&M University because I wanted to attend an HBCU that would offer me more than an education, but also opportunities that I wouldn’t receive if I went to a PWI or any other HBCU that didn’t have such a stellar networking system such as FAMU.  I remember when I made my final decision to come to FAMU was in my junior year when I attended the spring preview. The FAMU atmosphere was very intriguing. I felt as if I was at home, with the friendly environment. I fell in love with the university and knew this was the place for me.

My most memorable time at Florida A&M was when I ran my first campaign as Freshman Senator. I won my election and it was the best time of my life. I remember that week so well; the long nights out on the set to the early morning talking and walking with people from the café to class. That was one of the best times at FAMU because I finally got to step out of my shell and show people that I have the potential to be a leader. I remember the final day of voting when all of the candidates were outside talking to freshman and getting votes. I was extremely nervous, although I had a great support team. That same night when the results were out, I remember getting a phone call and tweets from my friends telling me that I won. I cried and jumped for joy alongside my bestfriends who also won their first elections. This is a memory that I will always keep because if it wasn’t for me having the courage to step out and present myself and my potential, I wouldn’t be where I am now.

My favorite class while at FAMU was SLS during the summer. I loved  this class because it was the beginning of my journey in college. My mentors were very helpful to me and made sure I was ready for my true transition at FAMU for the fall term. During my SLS class, I got a chance to meet new people with different personalities and be able to open up and learn things about me that I haven’t learned before.  This class really helped me mature my social aspects of dealing with people and how to carry myself in a professional manner.

My favorite professor at FAMU is Professor Dawson. I love this lady a lot because she was my SLS teacher in the summer. If it wasn’t for her, I probably wouldn’t be so inspired to take heed of leadership roles at FAMU and open up as a student. Professor Dawson always told her students that we were scholars and that we can be more than just the average student on campus. Because of her words of wisdom, it truly pushed me to be more than just average during my college years. I really appreciate her for caring about me and making sure that I had all of my things together for fall term. She really is a caring professor, I see her more as my school mom. Because of her teaching style, I decided to take her African American History class again for the fall term.

Attending FAMU has helped me develop a lot of morality about myself. I learned that FAMU will teach you how to humble yourself. Attending this prestigious university has taught me different strategies on   how to survive as a college student. Learning how to make my own way through this college journey with an encouraging attitude is something FAMU has made me understand. The actions of positivity will take you a long way at this university. And even though I am a first year student, I have definitely learned a lot from my summer and half of my fall term at this school. Being a FAMU RATTLER has taught me HBCU pride. I am proud to have confidence in myself as I become an educated young black woman.
