Solomon Carter Fuller was born August 11, 1872 in Monrovia, Liberia. Fuller’s grandfather was a Virginia slave, who bought him and his wife freedom. After his grandfather and the wife were free they immigrated to Liberia in 1852. His parents were Solomon C. and Anna Ursilla (James) Fuller. At the age 17 Fuller went to America to continue to his education. He attended Livingstone College in Salisbury, NC earning his A.B degree. Fuller later received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine in 1897. After completing his medical degree Fuller accepted an appointment at Westborough State Hospital for the Insane. He worked as a pathologist for 22 year rising to chief pathologist and then as a consultant for an additional 23 years. Like any person of color during this era Solomon Fuller endured racism and discrimination.
