Everyone has that one song that speaks for them when words can’t always express how they may feel, their personality, or a current disposition that takes place in their life. For me personally, the art of music is a way of meditation to ease my mind and to show self-expression. One of my ultimate favorite songs that help express my personhood would be I Was Here by Beyoncé. When I first heard this song off of her debut album 4, I fell in love with the overall message and the lyrics in the song. It touched me because the song is very inspirational and conveys the way I want my life to be remembered.
In the first verse of the song, Beyoncé sings “When I leave this world, I leave no regrets, leave something to remember so they won’t forget I was here.” That line in the song instantly connected to me, because I am very big on being a motivation to others. I’ve always had a genuine heart to help reach out to people and to leave my mark in a positive way on this earth. One major way that this song relates to a personal experience that I have had was when I was a mentor for younger girls in my community. One thing I always made sure I did was tell those girls that they are beautiful no matter what anyone says about them. I made it a priority to build a strong bond with those girls so they will always know that someone truly cares about them. Relating my personal experience to the song I Was Here only motivated me to do more in my lifetime to help serve as an encouragement to others.
Another main part in this song that really relates to me is in the third verse when Beyoncé sings “I just want them to know, that I gave my all, did my best, brought someone to happiness; left this world a little better just because I was here.” I’ve always been the type of person with the aspirations of wanting to make a change in the world, no matter if it’s something big or small. Hearing this song and listening to how it relates to my passion of being in some type of service to society shows what type of person that I am. In my opinion, I feel like the song I Was Here, was dedicated to me. It’s a song that truly speaks for my kind hearted personality and passion to continue doing great things in my lifetime.
